This model mother proudly breastfeeds her child during a fashion show: “I want my baby to be breastfed in public”
Public breastfeeding is still a very controversial subject, which often causes a lot of ink to be spilled. Why does a gesture as natural as breastfeeding provoke so many reactions, particularly in a reality that claims to be liberal and where, it must be said, bodies are frequently exposed?
Constantly raising controversies, exclusions and criticism, the American Mara Martin broke this circle by parading with her little daughter Aria, whom she was breastfeeding, in the middle of the parade.
It’s safe to say that Mara has been the subject of a lot of coverage lately, following Swimwear Fashion Week which took place in Miami last July.
The thirty-two-year-old model, who posed for Sports Illustrated, took the stage while breastfeeding her five-month-old baby. The photograph, moving for some and shameful for others, appeared virally in the media and on social sites and quickly sparked a new debate.
Mara shared her happiness on her Instagram site, saying: “There are no words to express how I feel after being selected for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Fashion Show. I’m amazed that my daughter and I are in the news for what I do every day.
I’m so grateful to help promote breastfeeding and show other women that we can all do it. This is my daily life as a mother.
The feedback on Social Networks was essential. Between praise and favorable reactions on the one hand, and total refusal on the other, with all the criticisms and attacks that this implies, Mara has managed to remain serene and proud of having succeeded, to her extent, in trying to “normalize ” breast feeding.
