I’m a 65-year-old widow and I live alone in a fairly quiet suburb. My house is small, and my electricity bill is usually stable.

One month, when I noticed that my electricity bill had suddenly doubled, I initially thought it was a technical error. But the following month, the bill was still just as high. So I decided to find out what was going on.

One day, I heard a strange noise in the yard. Looking out the window, I saw my neighbor charging her electric car using electricity from my house. She had plugged her cable into the outdoor outlet of my garage.

I was really surprised. She had a large house, a good job, and obviously had the means to pay for her own electricity. So I couldn’t believe it was simply a matter of money.

I went outside and asked her for an explanation. She replied in a very harsh tone that, since I lived alone, I didn’t need much electricity anyway.

She plugged it in… and an alarm started ringing.

I calmly walked outside with a printed bill in my hand.

“Here is exactly how much your car has cost me over the past two months.”

She tried to laugh it off, but I told her that I had also informed the landlord of her home that she was illegally using my electrical installation.

Most importantly, I offered her a solution: she could reimburse me every cent and apologize in front of two other neighbors whom she had told that I didn’t deserve my electricity.
