Engineers from Hacksmith Industries decided to bring to life one of the most famous technologies from the Dune universe: the stillsuit. In a detailed video, they showed the step-by-step process of creating a suit that can collect and process moisture released by the body, making it suitable for drinking.
Amazingly, the craftsmen managed to create a really working prototype in one day – the results of the experiment may well become the basis for a whole series of scientific developments.
The prototype was a thermoelectric cooler that creates condensation by cooling one side and heating the other. The system collects moisture that condenses on the cold side of the device.
A respirator and a modified trap are used to retain moisture inside the suit. A respirator with a valve allows you to inhale air from outside and exhale moist air inside the suit for subsequent condensation.
At this stage, the authors had to spend time testing different designs and materials. As a result, they managed to choose the ideal cut and the material itself. The condensate was collected in the required quantities and filtered, passing through the built-in filter.
They decided to conduct the final test in a sauna to create extreme conditions:
The technology turned out to really work. Such suits can be equipped for scientific expeditions in deserts.
