đČ The day I was supposed to meet my granddaughter for the first time, my daughter-in-law sent me a document containing fifteen rules: I was ready to follow them all, but when I read the last one, I was left frozen.
When I learned that my daughter-in-law was pregnant, I was overjoyed. It was my first grandchild, and I was eagerly looking forward to her birth. Since we knew it was going to be a girl, I had hand-knitted a beautiful pink blanket and bought several toys for her.
Then, one day, my son called me to share the wonderful news: his daughter had been born, and I could finally meet her.
But shortly afterward, my daughter-in-law sent me a document titled âRules for Meeting AmĂ©lie.â It contained fifteen rules.
At first, some of them seemed perfectly reasonable to me: wash your hands before picking up the baby, donât come if youâre sick, donât kiss the babyâŠ
Then the rules became a little stricter: donât give any advice regarding the babyâs upbringing, limit the length of visits, and donât ask to hold AmĂ©lie.
I tried to understand my daughter-in-law. She had just given birth and, after all, it was her baby. I could understand that she needed to feel safe and maintain control during such a special time.
But when I read the last rule, I froze. That rule was so cruel and personal that it risked seriously damaging our family relationships.
The rest of my story is in the article in the first comment đđđ.
According to the last rule, all the rules applied specifically to our family.
She had written: âMy parents donât need to follow them. They have already shown that they respect me as AmĂ©lieâs mother. My parents will naturally be more present because I feel more comfortable with them.â
I stared at that last sentence for a long time, my heart aching.
I didnât want to create a conflict, so I decided not to go.
When my son learned about these rules, he immediately came to see me.
He was just as shocked as I was: his wife hadnât even told him about the document.
He confronted her, furious, and they argued.
My daughter-in-law eventually admitted that she had been unfair.
She was afraid of losing control and had hidden behind rules that she already regretted.
The next day, she came to my house with Amélie.
She sincerely apologized, I hugged her, and then I finally met my granddaughter.
