😯 A teenage girl took a book without paying, but instead of calling the police, the shop assistant gave it to her: when I understood why she acted that way, I was left speechless.
I love reading in bookstores because it’s the only place where no one bothers you. One day, while I was choosing a new book, a teenage girl caught my attention.
She walked past me, lightly bumped into me, and quickly apologized without looking me in the eyes. I noticed she was very nervous. She moved along the shelves, glancing around as if she wanted to go unnoticed.
She had chosen a book but didn’t take it right away. She kept looking around before putting it back in its place.
Then, when the shop assistant was busy with another customer, I saw her discreetly slip the book into her bag. She was about to leave without paying, but the assistant had actually noticed everything.
I was sure she was going to call the police, because she seemed like a very strict woman. So I decided to step in and say that the girl was with me, ready to pay for the book on her behalf.
But to my great surprise, the shop assistant gave the book to the girl and whispered something to her. The girl left the store, and my curiosity pushed me to ask the assistant what had happened. Her answer left me speechless.

I approached the shop assistant, curious to understand.
She looked at me with a mix of sadness and kindness before beginning.
“This young girl didn’t want to steal that book for herself.”
She took a deep breath and continued: “It was her mother’s favorite book, who passed away last year.
She wanted to place it on her grave, but I couldn’t let her take a stolen book… her mother didn’t deserve that.
So I gave her the book in memory of her mother.”
The assistant’s explanation left me speechless.
I then understood that appearances are often deceiving: the woman who always seemed strict and a bit harsh actually had a kind heart.
