This Monday, September 11, 2023 , Americans and particularly New Yorkers commemorate the twenty-second anniversary of the attacks which struck the twin towers of the World Trade Center .
As a reminder, 2,753 people died following this attack caused by jihadists. The latter, under the command of Al-Qaeda , rushed two planes which flew straight into the towers.
At the time of writing, this is one of the deadliest attacks in the world. While many victims were identified shortly after this real tragedy, unfortunately, this was not the case for all.
As our colleagues at RTL Infos report , only 1,649 victims could be identified . But, despite the years that have passed, the identification procedure of those killed in this attack has not stopped. And this is what allowed two victims to be identified very recently.
New technology enables new identifications
As the United States authorities announced , a man and a woman – whose families wished to remain anonymous – were able to be identified using their DNA . The New York Bureau of Forensic Medicine said this was made possible thanks to new technology .
It is “a recently adopted next-generation sequencing technology that is more sensitive and faster than conventional DNA techniques,” he said.
As for Eric Adams , the mayor of “The Big Apple”, he said in a press release: ” We hope that these new identifications will bring some comfort to the families of the victims , and the efforts made by the office of the chief medical examiner “testify to the city’s unwavering commitment to reuniting all World Trade Center victims with their loved ones . ” Now, there remain 1,104 victims to be identified.
