I always buy my bread at the same grocery store, and the shopkeeper, Jack, is one of our neighbors.
He’s an elderly man who lost his wife two years ago, and this job has become one of the few positive things in his life. He’s very kind and loves his work.
One day, as I was passing by the store, I heard raised voices coming from the checkout area. When I walked in, I saw Jack visibly stressed, struggling with a scanner that was making errors.
In front of him was a customer, a rude young woman, speaking to him in an arrogant tone.
She was saying: “Why is an old man like you working here? People your age shouldn’t work in places like this because you’re slowing down the line just because you don’t know how to use the computers.”
No one intervened, and it made me deeply upset. But I couldn’t remain indifferent like the others. So, I decided to take action. Here’s what I did…

I slipped into the line behind her and, forcing a smile, I began to respond: “Don’t worry, I’ll talk to the manager after you leave. I’ll make sure he takes your thoughts into account.”
The young woman, clearly relieved that someone was going to support her, immediately accepted.
“Ah, thank you! Finally, someone will do something!”
I explained that the old man worked here to keep himself occupied, and it wasn’t about the money.
“Since he’s not here for the salary, it shouldn’t be a problem to get rid of him, right?” I added, with a sarcastic tone.
She began to doubt and, realizing she had fallen into her own trap, quickly paid for her groceries and rushed out of the store.
At that moment, the manager arrived, curious about the situation.
I told him what had happened, and the old man, who had overheard everything, burst out laughing.
