😦 “I don’t want money, just a bit of your time,” a stranger told me, kneeling and rocking her baby: what she shared with me broke my heart.
I always have lunch at one of the cafés in the city, and that day was no exception. I was lost in my thoughts, so much so that I didn’t even notice the stranger who had approached my table.
“I don’t want money, just a bit of your time,” the woman said in a soft voice. I looked up and, surprised, I saw her kneeling in front of me, rocking her baby.
At that moment, one of the waitresses came over and asked, “Is everything alright, sir? Do you know this woman, or would you like me to call security?”
“No, everything is fine. Please bring a cup of coffee for this lady,” I replied to the waitress.
I turned to the stranger and said, “Alright, I’m listening. Please, sit down before you continue.”
She began to speak, and what she shared with me broke my heart. Here’s what happened next.

She took a deep breath before speaking, her eyes filled with sadness.
“My husband left me three months ago,” she said, her voice trembling.
“I’ve been left alone with my baby, and I have no one to turn to. I don’t want pity, just a bit of time for someone to listen to me.”
I listened to her, moved, then I asked, “Why did you choose to speak to me?”
She lowered her eyes and replied in a calm voice, “Because you’re the only person here who’s not absorbed by their phone.”
That touched me deeply.
After a moment, I took out my foundation card and promised her help.
“Thank you, really, I don’t even know how to thank you,” she murmured.
As I watched her leave, I understood that sometimes, a simple act of listening can change a life.
