I am a trauma surgeon. Fifteen years ago, while I was on night duty, a little girl was admitted to the emergency room after a terrible car accident. Her condition was critical.
The operation lasted twelve hours, but we managed to save her life. Unfortunately, her parents died while being transferred to the hospital. Since she had no other relatives, she was supposed to be placed in a foster home.
When she looked at me with her big eyes filled with tears, begging me not to leave her alone, I couldn’t remain indifferent. I decided to adopt her.
The first few months were very difficult. She couldn’t sleep because of her nightmares. She often cried and asked for her parents. Little by little, her condition improved.

A final anonymous message claimed that she had been saving money for years and was preparing to leave me without looking back.
With a heavy heart, I confronted her as soon as she returned.
To my great surprise, she burst into tears before explaining everything to me.
The savings were meant to replace part of my salary so that I could reduce my hospital shifts and finally enjoy life.
As for the mysterious document, it was her official request to take my last name.
