I had prepared her favorite dish and placed it in front of her. Then, I noticed she was staring at her plate without touching it.
“Why aren’t you eating?” I asked gently.
She murmured, looking down: “Am I allowed to eat today?”
All day long, she had been asking for permission before doing anything, and I thought it was just being polite. But this question really surprised me, and I stayed confused for a moment before replying.
“Of course, sweetheart, you can eat.”
The moment she heard my answer, she burst into tears. She cried as if she had been holding her tears back for a long time.
