I’ve been married for two years now, and my mother-in-law has been living with us for some time. At first, everything was fine between us, but over time, I started to feel a certain tension.
She began to unjustifiably suspect me and monitor my actions. I had never given her any reason to act this way, and I was lost in how to handle it.
One day, she authoritarianly asked me to give her the password to my phone. She told me that if I had nothing to hide, there would be no reason not to give it to her. What disturbed me most about this situation was that my husband remained completely indifferent and didn’t intervene to defend me or protect my privacy.

After that humiliating episode, I took a moment for myself to reflect on everything that had just happened.
It wasn’t just my mother-in-law’s intrusive request that hurt me, but especially my husband’s silence.
I had hoped he would say something, set a boundary, or at least support me… but nothing.
He just stood there, silent, as if my privacy wasn’t worth protecting.
That very evening, I decided to talk to my husband one-on-one.
I calmly explained how uncomfortable this situation had made me, and how deeply disappointed I was by his lack of reaction.
He listened, a bit embarrassed, and then admitted that he didn’t want to create a conflict with his mother.
But for me, this wasn’t a small misunderstanding.
It was an intrusion, a questioning of my trust and my place in our home.
I made him understand that mutual respect was essential in a relationship, but also in a family.
If his mother had doubts or insecurities, she should talk to him, not to me in such an authoritarian manner.
Since that conversation, things have improved a little.
He has started to take more distance, set some boundaries, although it’s not perfect.
As for me, I’ve learned to not let such behavior slide without speaking up.
