😲 My sergeant had ordered me to leave my companion and continue, but I didn’t listen: at that moment, he didn’t even know what was about to happen.
The heat was unbearable, and we were ten miles from the base, our bags too heavy. I was used to the pain, but the young soldier by my side was starting to weaken. He had an injury and could barely walk.
He sat down, exhausted, and told me, “Go, leave me here. Continue without me.” But I couldn’t.
The sergeant shouted, “We need to go, leave him!”
I hesitated for a moment, then turned to leave. But I couldn’t. I refused to abandon him. “I can’t, he needs help,” I replied.
I stayed. At that moment, neither of us knew what was going to happen next.

The sergeant left us there and went on, but I couldn’t abandon the young soldier, exhausted and injured.
I searched through my bag and handed him a water ration and energy bars.
He slowly took the bottle, drank in silence, his eyes filled with gratitude.
“It’s going to be okay, we’ll make it,” I told him, trying to reassure him, even though I wasn’t sure myself.
Little by little, he regained some strength.
We continued our way, slowly but surely.
A few hours later, we spotted a figure on the horizon.
It was the sergeant, he was injured, his face marked by pain.
Without hesitation, the young soldier rushed to him and, with an incredible effort, carried him on his back.
“We’re continuing, sergeant. We don’t leave anyone behind,” he said, determined.
In the end, we made it to the base, together, proving that anything can be overcome when you don’t leave anyone behind.
