Before his eighteenth birthday, my son often talked about wanting to get a tattoo. Honestly, I like tattoos too, so I wasn’t against the idea. Whenever I asked him what he planned to get tattooed, he would simply tell me it was a surprise and that I would see it once it was finished.
The day after his birthday, he walked into the kitchen with a huge smile on his face. He rolled up the sleeve of his T-shirt and finally showed me his tattoo.
I froze. It was a portrait of my ex-husband’s new wife. I knew my son was making an effort to maintain a good relationship with his father and stepmother, but I simply couldn’t understand this tattoo.
And that wasn’t even the worst part. Imagine my reaction when he told me it had been his father’s idea. I was furious. I demanded an explanation, and he finally confessed everything. He had made a deal with his father.
When he revealed what his father had promised him in exchange for getting the tattoo, I grabbed my keys and rushed to their house to confront my ex-husband.
