😦 One evening, I received a call from the hospital, and they told me that a little boy had listed me as his emergency contact: it was strange, because I didn’t have any children, but I went anyway, and what I discovered left me speechless.
One evening, I received a call from the hospital.
– Mrs. Carter, you need to come immediately. Your son has had an accident.
I thought it was a mistake. I have never been married and I have never had children. So I calmly replied:
– You must be mistaken, I don’t have any children.
But the nurse insisted:
– He keeps repeating that you are his emergency contact.
– But who is he? And how does he know me?
– I don’t know, ma’am. He had an accident and refuses to speak to anyone else except you. He only gave your name and your phone number.
I was unsettled. All of this seemed impossible, and yet… something pushed me to go and understand what was happening, and what I discovered left me speechless.

When I arrived at the hospital, a nurse led me to the boy’s room.
He was lying there, his arm in a cast, his eyes fixed on the door.
When he saw me, he whispered my name as if he had known me forever.
I froze. He seemed familiar to me, without me understanding why.
“Who are you?” I asked softly.
He tightened a small bracelet around his wrist.
On it, an engraved name took my breath away: that of my best friend, whom I had lost touch with years ago after a silly argument.
The doctor came in and calmly confirmed: “This child is your friend’s son. She listed your name as his emergency contact without telling you. She is currently hospitalized abroad.”
The boy whispered: “Mom said you would come if anything happened to me.”
I smiled at him, telling him his mother would be back soon and that in the meantime, he could count on me.
And without really realizing it, I began looking after him day after day, until his mother returned.
