😦 Since my childhood, I believed that my father had died in a car accident, but at the age of twenty, I discovered a letter from him that changed everything.
I was five years old when my father passed away. I grew up with my stepmother, who told me it was an accident that happened on a rainy day due to a slippery road.
She was very kind to me, and I never doubted her words. I considered her as a mother, and sometimes my friends didn’t even suspect that she was actually my stepmother.
But one evening, everything changed. It was my twentieth birthday. My stepmother had organized a perfect celebration for me. Everything was wonderful, the only thing missing was the presence of my father by my side.
When I returned home, I opened his old photo album to relive those memories. And there, among the photos, I found a letter from my father, written the day before his accident.

In the letter, he said he would come home a bit earlier for my birthday.
I remembered that it was I who had asked him to come home earlier that day, and he had this accident which, perhaps, wouldn’t have happened if he had come home at the usual time.
My stepmother explained to me that she had hidden this truth from me to prevent me from feeling guilty.
She had protected me all these years, thinking I would suffer too much if I knew that he had passed away because of his love for me.
She said to me, “You are my daughter, even if you weren’t born of me, and I don’t want you to feel guilty.”
Since that day, I live with the weight of this truth, but also with the gratitude of having been loved by a woman who did everything to protect me.
