“Some people dedicate their entire lives to pursuing their dreams, while others work to support the success of their loved ones.
Blaze Barrett from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is one of those men who would do anything for his family. His 17-year-old daughter, Gabby, considers him her “backbone” because he has always been there for her.
Blaze holds two jobs to make ends meet: he works as a custodian in a Goodwill store during the day and as a janitor in office buildings at night.
Fearless in the face of challenges, Blaze tirelessly works to lift his family out of poverty and help them achieve their life ambitions.
Gabby has been performing on stage since the age of 9, hoping to use her talent to support her family. Throughout this journey, Blaze has been by her side, guiding, encouraging, and supporting her in every possible way.
“You are my life, and I love you,” he tells Gabby before her audition.
Gabby admires Carrie Underwood, an ‘Idol’ alum, so she naturally chooses some of Carrie’s songs for her audition.
As soon as she takes the stage, the resemblance to Carrie is immediately noticeable: Gabby has platinum blonde hair, pretty dimples, and a stunning country-rock leather pants.
The judges seem to like her instantly, but will her vocal talents be enough to make it to Hollywood?
Gabby starts singing Carrie’s poignant song, but before she can finish the first verse, the judges stop her. It’s clear they’re struggling with this audition because, even though they love Gabby, something isn’t working.
“We’re looking for you. As Luke said, we don’t need a ‘yukbox,'” explains Lionel Richie. The other judges nod in agreement. Even though they really like Gabby, they don’t want her to mimic Carrie Underwood; they want to see her as herself.
Luke Bryan further explains, “When you try to sound country, you don’t sound country.”
“Too cliché,” acknowledges Katy Perry.
They ask Gabby to sing an additional song, and she agrees, singing a simple tune she learned at church.
Suddenly, the real Gabby appears before the judges, and they love what they hear! After all, Gabby is thrilled when she’s given a ticket to Hollywood.
But the judges weren’t done with Gabby yet. Playfully, Katie asks if they can pull a prank on Blaze. They know he’s anxiously waiting outside, so they decide to play a little trick on him.
Feigning sadness, Katie sticks her head out and asks Blaze to come into the room to “console” his daughter. Blaze agrees, looking extremely solemn.
Fortunately, they don’t keep him in suspense for too long. As he approaches Gabby, his daughter exclaims, “I did it! I did it, Dad!”
