This multi-billionaire has never owned a house or a vehicle and has donated all his wealth to underprivileged children: “He deserves our encouragement.”
Charles Feeney, the founder of the DutyFreeShoppers chain in 1960 with his friend Robert Miller, built a retail empire in airports worldwide.
His success quickly made him a billionaire. However, from a young age, Feeney was never attracted to luxury or ostentatious living. He chose to live simply and frugally, refusing any accumulation of material possessions.
At 89 years old, Feeney has never owned a car or a house. He has always lived in a rented apartment, traveled in economy class, and always wore a plastic Casio watch.
“Sure, I am a billionaire, but I live like this,” he might have said. Forbes published an article about this great philanthropist, revealing that he donated almost all of his wealth, while keeping a modest amount for the last years of his life.
As a philanthropist, Feeney encouraged the idea of “giving while living,” aiming to share his wealth before the end of his life. He explained to Forbes: “You learn a lot: it’s wonderful to see this project come to fruition.
Thanks to all who have been a part of this project. And for those who want to discover Giving While Living: give it a try, you’ll love it.”
In 2012, he estimated that he had set aside about $2 million for his and his wife’s retirement. In other words, he gave away 375,000% more than what he had initially kept. Feeney acted anonymously, wishing to avoid media attention.
Unlike many philanthropists, he carefully concealed his donations. Forbes dubbed him the “James Bond of philanthropy” for his secret yet massive activities.
Feeney exemplifies the spirit of charity perfectly. His personality is a source of motivation not only because of his immense wealth but also because of his modesty and honesty.
