Francis Zubber was weaving through the trees in the deep powder of Mount Baker, in northwest Washington state, unaware that he would be in the right place at the right time to become a true hero.
Zubber had a one-in-a-million chance of spotting him. He had just passed by a snowboarder trapped and slid right into the “tree well.”
When he saw the man’s snowboard moving around behind a large mass of snow, he realized that he was still connected to someone below.
Francis’s camcorder captures him approaching the area and asking, “Are you okay?”
With no response, he hurries toward the deep snow, takes off his skis, rushes to the snow mound, and digs with his hands.
Zubber tries to reassure the snowboarder until the individual’s visor emerges from the snow, at which point he takes a deep breath.
“Thank you,” the boy says. “Yeah, no problem,” Zubber replies.
“For now, I’ll just say that the mountains don’t care about the skill or experience you have,” Mr. Zubber states in the video he uploaded.
