😲 During a 12-hour flight, a 10-year-old girl kept kicking the back of my seat while her mother did absolutely nothing to stop her. So, here’s what I did.
I’m a cardiac surgeon in Chicago, and I was returning from Tokyo after an exhausting medical conference. All I wanted was to get some sleep because the flight was going to last 12 hours, but a little girl wouldn’t stop kicking my seat.
At first, I tried to remain patient. I had children of my own, too, and I understood that a long journey could be difficult for them. But after almost two hours of repeated kicking, I couldn’t take it anymore.
When I asked the mother to intervene, she looked up and snapped that I shouldn’t fly if I couldn’t tolerate children. Her daughter burst out laughing before kicking my seat again.
I turned around and decided to stop arguing.
A few minutes later, the mother got up to take her daughter to the restroom. As soon as they left, I did what I had been planning to do during those two long hours.
When they returned, the woman approached her seat. But the moment she saw what was waiting for her, her expression changed. She began screaming in front of all the passengers.

I had noticed that the mother’s tablet power bank was swollen and giving off a worrying smell of hot plastic.
Concerned for the passengers’ safety, I pressed the call button and immediately alerted a flight attendant.
After checking the situation, she decided to disconnect the devices and remove the battery in accordance with safety procedures.
When the mother returned with her daughter, she discovered that her tablet was gone.
Furious, she accused me of taking it, but the flight attendant explained that the battery had been overheating and showing worrying signs.
Without her tablet and headphones, the mother had to deal with Lily’s restlessness on her own.
The little girl became bored, asked endless questions, demanded attention, and started kicking the back of my seat again.
This time, her mother heard every single noise and gradually began to understand just how exhausting the situation was.
Eventually, I decided to suggest a detective game to keep Lily occupied.
I told her a story about a mysterious cookie theft and gave her the role of detective.
Her mother, initially reluctant, eventually joined the investigation.
Little by little, they began talking, laughing, and searching for clues together.
For the first time since the flight began, they were communicating calmly instead of arguing.
Thanks to the game, the mother discovered that she could hold her daughter’s attention without relying on a tablet.
I was finally able to sleep for a few hours, while Lily fell asleep against her mother’s shoulder.
Before landing, the mother indirectly acknowledged that the situation could have been handled better.
I had helped her understand that respecting other passengers and teaching her child appropriate behavior were essential to making the journey more pleasant for everyone.
