When I was a kid, my grandpa often talked to me about heroes—not the ones from books, but real ones, those who do incredible things without seeking recognition.
One story that left a lasting impression on me is about Ma Sanxiao, a 70-year-old man with extraordinary determination.
Ma Sanxiao, from Mayu, a village in Hebei Province, China, embarked on his remarkable journey in 2000. After losing his legs due to illness, he decided to plant trees to support his family. What started as a necessity became his life mission.
The region, near the Taihang Mountains, was suffering from massive deforestation, threatening to turn it into a desert. But Ma didn’t give up. Over the years, he planted 17,000 trees, helping to restore the local ecosystem and prevent an ecological disaster.
Every morning at 5 a.m., this man gets into his TukTuk, heads to the affected areas, removes his prosthetics, and crawls to plant the trees. It’s not an easy task; he has endured many injuries, but he has never given up.
In 2008, the government recognized his efforts by providing financial assistance. But for Ma, money isn’t the main thing. He simply wants to give back to society what he has received and feels safe among the trees he has planted, as if they are a part of him.
