😦 I found brown spots on the leaves and was surprised when I discovered what they were.

A few days ago, I noticed brown spots on a leaf. At first, I didn’t pay much attention. But very quickly, these spots spread: all the leaves were covered.

I immediately thought it was a pest attack. I took several photos to show my grandfather, who knows a lot about gardening.

I rushed to his house, but he wasn’t home. So I called him right away to come back without wasting a second. Since he has an old mobile phone, I couldn’t send him the photos, so I explained the situation to him.

He came back quickly and I showed him the photos. When he explained to me what it was, I was really surprised.

These small brown spots or dots are not a disease, but a natural part of the plant.

They are called sori (singular: sorus).

Sori contain sporangia, tiny structures where spores develop.

Spores play a role similar to seeds in other plants, but since ferns don’t produce flowers or seeds, they reproduce through this system.

When the spores mature, they are released into the air.

Carried by the wind, they can germinate in a moist and favorable place, giving rise to a new generation of ferns.

It’s important to know that the presence of these brown spots is perfectly normal.

Many people first think they are pests or diseases, but on the contrary, it indicates that the fern is healthy and mature enough to reproduce.
