Last weekend, I stayed at a friend’s place. I woke up a little earlier than usual. My friend was still sleeping, so I decided to step out onto the balcony to get some fresh air without waking her up.
When I tried to open the door, I realized it was locked, and I couldn’t figure out how to open it. There was this strange black object that I couldn’t figure out how to use.
When my friend woke up, she showed me how to use it, and I was really surprised.

As my friend explained to me, it’s actually a child or pet safety lock.
It’s installed on sliding doors, like those leading to a balcony.
This device is designed to prevent the door from being opened, even if the main handle is turned.
It’s very useful to stop a curious child or dog from opening the door by themselves.
What surprised me was how simple the mechanism is: the black arm can be turned or lowered into a specific position that locks the sliding door.
Yet, without knowing how it works, it’s almost impossible to understand what it’s for.
It’s a great example of discreet but effective security.
Since then, I’ve been thinking about installing one at my place, because it’s a fantastic idea to secure a door without needing to add an extra lock.
Plus, it’s easy to remove if you no longer need it.
