😯 I told my neighbor that I’m not her emergency contact and that she shouldn’t bother me every day for her small needs: the next day, she didn’t come to my place, and I thought she had simply understood. But when I spoke to the building manager, what I discovered left me speechless.

A year ago, I moved into a new apartment. On the first day, an elderly neighbor came to welcome me.

The next day, she knocked on my door at 9 PM and asked me to change the batteries in her remote control. I did it.

The following day, she came back and asked me to help with her phone, as she couldn’t connect to Wi-Fi. And so, every day, at exactly 9 PM, she would knock on my door and ask for a small favor.

At first, I thought she lived alone, and it wasn’t hard for me to help. But over time, it started to annoy me.

One day, I was at my wit’s end, and I told her: “I’m not your emergency contact, leave me alone.”

She left without saying a word, and the next day, she didn’t knock on my door. I thought she had finally understood and was leaving me alone, but when I spoke to the building manager, what I discovered left me speechless.

The manager told me that my neighbor’s husband had passed away in their apartment three years ago, exactly at 9:00 PM.

She had tried to call for help, but no one came to assist her.

Since then, every evening, she would knock on her neighbors’ doors, not to ask for help, but to make sure someone would be there, just in case someone needed help.

That evening, at 9:00 PM, I went to knock on her door.

When she opened, I said, “I just wanted to make sure someone would answer.”

She smiled, touched.

Since that day, at 9:00 PM, one of us knocks on the other’s door.

Sometimes it’s for a question, sometimes just to exchange a few words.
