One day, our teacher wrote a long equation on the board. He said it was very difficult to solve and that, in fact, the person who managed to solve it could even receive the Abel Prize.
For those who don’t know, the Abel Prize was established in 2001 by the Norwegian government. It is a very prestigious international mathematics prize, awarded annually.
In the class, there is a black student, Alex, who was listening attentively. Noticing his interest, the teacher asked him, “Are you interested too?”
Alex isn’t known for his knowledge and generally doesn’t have very good grades. But this equation caught his attention, and he wanted to try solving it.
Seeing him focus, the teacher, in a mocking tone, said, “If you solve this equation, you’re free from all my exams; if not, I’ll make you leave the school.” And here’s what happened next.

Alex went up to the board.
The other students watched, skeptical, thinking the challenge was too difficult for him.
Even our teacher was smiling, convinced that Alex wouldn’t solve anything.
Alex focused and, little by little, began to solve the equation methodically.
With each step, the murmurs faded.
At first mocking, the teacher fell silent, then started watching attentively.
When Alex found the solution, he couldn’t help but smile, a little surprised himself.
“You… you did it?” the teacher said, unable to believe his eyes.
Alex responded humbly, “Actually, I wasn’t bad at math. My grandmother is a mathematics specialist and taught me a lot of things, even though I didn’t always mention it.”
The teacher, ashamed of his attitude, took a moment of silence before saying, “I will keep my promise, Alex. You are exempt from all my exams.”
