😲 “If your son were a real hero, then why are you poor?” the officer said in a contemptuous tone : a man in uniform approached after hearing everything, and what he said about this woman made the officer regret his words.
The old woman held tightly the portrait of her deceased son in her arms. Her face was marked by sadness. Suddenly, an officer noticed her and approached. He looked at the portrait and said in a disdainful tone:
“I suppose that’s your son.”
“Yes, he is a true hero,” the woman replied with pride.
“Oh really? And you? I suppose you live in a nice house, worthy of a hero’s mother.”
“No, sir, I live in a very modest house.”
“If your son were a real hero, then why are you poor?” he said with contempt.
The woman felt her heart tighten. Her hands trembled slightly, but she said nothing. The officer’s words were cruel and unfair. She simply lowered her head to hide her tears.
Suddenly, a man in uniform stepped forward behind her. He had heard the entire conversation. He placed a hand on the woman’s shoulder, and what he said about her made the officer deeply regret his words.

The man explained that this woman had once been very wealthy.
After her son’s death, she gave all her money to fund the purchase of equipment to treat and save wounded soldiers.
Thanks to her, many lives were saved.
He added that she had done something very few people would do.
She thought of others despite her own pain.
The officer was shocked upon hearing this.
He lowered his head, regretting his arrogant behavior, and said: “I am truly sorry for my words. I behaved like a fool. Your son was a hero… and so are you.”
