One of the smallest surviving newborns recently shared a tender moment with her father.
The baby girl was born weighing only 551 grams and measuring just a little more than her father’s hand.
Her story becomes even more extraordinary considering that the father, Rhys, was involved in a serious motorcycle accident, putting his life at risk during the same period.
Karen’s joy of pregnancy was initially overwhelmed when, at only 18 weeks, their daughter was born prematurely.
Specialists warned the couple that the baby’s chances of survival were slim.
“At the time of birth, the newborn was the size of my hand, almost didn’t look like a baby in the photos.
But now, looking back, I think ‘wow, what a miracle.’ She has overcome many challenges, and I feel fortunate to have her with us,” shared the mother.
After a five-month stay in the hospital, the baby finally got permission to return home.
At eight months old, her weight was 8.5 pounds, just slightly above the average weight of a full-term newborn.
Despite her small size, the baby is progressing normally and is catching up with other children.
The couple received support from the humanitarian organization “Cots for Tots,” which is committed to raising funds for life-saving equipment for premature babies and provides free accommodations for parents and their other children during the hospital stay.”
