😦 My husband asked me to give a sealed letter to a woman I had never met, as his final wish. I did what he had asked, and when this woman opened the letter and read it, she said to me: “So, he didn’t tell you everything?”
Henri and I had been married for thirty years, and he had always been the man I trusted the most. I thought I knew him because there were no secrets between us.
Yet, when he was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, his final wish changed everything. He understood that he didn’t have much time left, so one day, he gave me a sealed letter and asked me to give it to an unknown woman only after his death.
When I asked him who this woman was, he only made me promise never to read it and to do this as his final wish.
I did exactly as he had asked. I went to the address written on the letter, and a woman opened the door for me. When she heard my husband’s name, her face suddenly tensed.
She took the letter, and when she read the first line, she looked at me and said:
— “So, he didn’t tell you everything?”
And what she told me afterward left me speechless, and I realized that I had never truly known my husband.

She lowered her eyes before whispering:
— “I’m his daughter.”
I felt my heart stop for a moment.
His daughter? Henri had never told me about having a child.
She explained to me that Henri had left her mother a few weeks before she was born.
He was young, frightened, and unable to take on this new life.
But, contrary to what her mother had made her believe for a long time, Henri had never completely disappeared.
He had always tried to keep in touch with her, discreetly.
He sent her money, paid certain expenses, and made sure she lacked nothing.
Even after he married me, he continued to help her.
— “He didn’t want to hurt you,” she told me. “He thought he could make everything right someday.”
I then understood why this letter had been his final wish.
Henri wasn’t just asking me to deliver a letter to her.
He was asking me to meet the part of his life that he had kept hidden from me.
