In the course of the year 2021, Charlotte Gainsbourg unveils her first film at Cannes, “Jane by Charlotte,” an affectionate and touching documentary about her mother, Jane Birkin.
A photographic retrospective of a close fifty-year mother-daughter relationship.
“After a career of thirty-six years as an actress, ten nominations, and an award for her performance at the Cannes Film Festival, it is as a director that Charlotte climbs the steps of the Festival this year.
Represented out of competition, “Jane by Charlotte” is the singer-actress’s first feature film.
In this documented film, she paints a tender, discreet, and touching portrait of her mother.
“For me, my mother is the embodiment of ultimate elegance.”
“It’s an excuse to be closer to her, to observe her, to spend time with her. I’m very happy to have found this pretext,” she says in a recent interview.
During a show at her father’s iconic home in Paris, on tour for three years, Charlotte Gainsbourg accompanies her mother, equipped with a camera.
In the December issue of Paris Match, the former partner and inspiration of Serge Gainsbourg spoke about this family initiative.
“It’s a pleasure to share this project,” she says with enthusiasm. “I had never imagined that she would be so interested in me.
“I knew the importance Serge had in her life, as well as the period of grief and sadness she went through. Yet, I didn’t think she wanted to know so many details about me.”
As for Charlotte Gainsbourg, she wants to pay tribute to the work of her parents, the legendary duo of the 1970s.
“For me, my mother embodies ultimate class, beauty, purity, and supreme intelligence,” she declared in 2017 in the columns of Madame Figaro.
