š¦ One day, I decided to help a stranger on the highway, but what happened next made me regret my act of kindness.
One evening, while driving home from work, I was on the highway when I saw a vehicle stopped by a police officer. I slowed down because the lane was too narrow to pass. At that moment, the driver of the vehicle, a woman, rushed toward my car, waving at me.
At first, I thought we knew each other, but I just couldnāt remember her. I generally have a hard time remembering peopleās faces. There was also a little girl with her, who ran toward me calling me “Daddy.”
The woman then came closer, kissed me, and whispered in my ear: “Please, sir, pretend to be my husband.”
She explained that she didnāt have any money on her and that I just needed to pay the fine for a minor infraction.
“Please, sir, say youāre my husband and that youāll pay for me, otherwise the officer wonāt let us leave.”
She added: “I promise Iāll pay you back, itās just that I canāt reach my husband, and my son is all alone at home. I need to get home quickly.”
I replied, “Donāt worry, you donāt have to pay me back.” Then, so the officer could hear me, I added aloud, “Iāll pay, honey, and Iāll follow you afterward. Go home safely.”
After she left, the officer came up to me. What he said next was completely unexpected, to the point that I decided never to help people in such situations again.
The full story is in the first comment below ššš.
I found myself facing the officer, who explained that the fine wasnāt a simple minor infraction, but a serious violation, far worse than what I had been led to believe.
I explained, embarrassed, that I was just a stranger who had wanted to help a woman in distress.
I told him everything, emphasizing that I didnāt know this woman.
At first, he seemed skeptical, but after some explanations, he realized I had indeed been manipulated.
He set off in pursuit of her, and I continued on my way.
I never knew if the officer found this woman, or what happened to her.
All I know is that it was a good lesson for me.
Since that day, I decided never to intervene to help a stranger again.
