What made this photo intriguing was the presence of a white boy, Thomas, among a Black family.
After thorough research, the genealogist discovered that Thomas was the child of the Hayes, a couple who had died in a fire in February 1920.
The local orphanage, known for its mistreatment, seemed to have erased the disappearances of children.
Thanks to Evelyn Price, 93 years old, he found out that Samuel and Clara Johnson had saved Thomas after the tragedy, risking their lives to keep him from ending up in that orphanage.
Clara, moved by the child’s fate, insisted on taking him in despite the dangers.
