😦 We had never invited one of our colleagues to company events for four years: after he resigned, we found a note in his drawer that left all of us speechless.
We worked with Adam for four years. He was a distracted and shy man, but always ready to help others. Yet, he never participated in the parties. He didn’t attend company events, didn’t drink champagne, and always left the office precisely at 6 p.m.
We had gotten used to thinking that he was simply a bit odd and didn’t want to be disturbed. Over time, we even stopped inviting him, thinking that was really what he wanted.
One day, he didn’t show up to work, which was unusual because he was very punctual and never late. Later, we learned that he had resigned without any explanation.
The next day, we found a note. After reading these words, a heavy silence fell over the office. No one dared to speak.

In the note, he had written: “Thank you for not inviting me to the parties. After my daughter’s death, I couldn’t pretend to be happy under the loud music and the laughter of others.”
After reading these words, a heavy silence filled the office.
We thought back to every invitation we hadn’t sent, to every silent judgment we had made about him.
We had considered him distant, cold, strange… without ever imagining the pain he carried every day.
Some of us had tears in our eyes.
Others simply stared at the floor, overwhelmed by a sense of shame.
We had worked alongside him for four years without truly knowing him.
That day, we realized how easy it is to judge someone without knowing their story.
And how a little attention, or simply a sincere question, might have changed everything.
