Bravery knows no age, and five-year-old Lexi Shymanski is the perfect proof.
One day, her mother, Angela, was driving Lexi and her little brother Peter through the Canadian Rockies into Alberta. However, the mother was very tired and sleepy, and we all know that driving in such a state can lead to disaster.
Angela fell asleep at the wheel and their car ended up rolling down a 40-foot-deep embankment on the side of the road.
Baby Peter suffered a head injury and a brain hemorrhage, while Angela broke her back. Lexi is the only one who did not suffer fatal consequences.
Although she was only five years old, Lexi knew that her mother and brother’s lives were in her hands. She quickly detached herself from the child’s seat and began to climb the steep embankment to look for help.
Barefoot in the rocks, Lexi managed to climb the steep terrain and reach the street. Once she arrived, she started waving at the cars and luckily one of them stopped.
They were Lonnie and Jeremiah Jurek, who decided to stop and see what was going on. They knew something was wrong when they saw Lexi all alone on the side of the road.
“Seeing her come off a very big embankment,” Lonnie said in an interview with Inside Edition, “I said to myself: “Jeremiah, we have to stop!” “.
“She was standing on the side of the road trying to get traffic to stop,” Jeremiah added, “she was yelling and waving at vehicles to stop.”
Not wanting to waste time, the couple went down the embankment and saw Lexi’s family. They called emergency services and, shortly after, Angela and Peter were taken to hospital. They both had to undergo surgery. Fortunately, they are recovering.
Speaking about her daughter’s courage, Angela, who used a wheelchair for a while and now walks with the help of a cane, told Inside Edition: “This little girl is the reason we we are so proud of her:
“It’s because of this little girl that I am alive, my baby is alive and my family is together. Lexi’s father added: “I started bawling. I couldn’t believe what she had done.”
Edmonton police awarded Lexi a bronze medal for her bravery. Without his actions, his mother and brother would have died.
Well done, Lexi, you are a true superhero!
